The Flyting are an exciting new folk band steeped in the rich musical traditions of Scotland and Ireland. Their captivating sound weaves together self-penned tunes with powerful ballads and more contemporary songs.
Having met on the Newcastle traditional music session scene in 2003, Scots fiddler Shona Mooney and Belfast button accordionist Sean O’Kane formed The Flyting in 2017 alongside Scots singer Amy Leach and Highland guitarist Alasdair Paul. Staying true to their roots whilst highlighting common threads between their cultures the group unleash their feisty and innovative approach.

Shona Mooney – Fiddle, Vocals
Shona Mooney is a fiddler, singer and composer from the Scottish Borders. She was a recipient of the highly coveted BBC Radio Scotland Young
Traditional Musician in 2005. A founder member of The Shee and Monster Ceilidh Band, she has composed new music for cinema, musical theatre and created a new piece ‘For A’ That Variation’ that was performed by 22 fiddlers in the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow. She has released two solo CDs: Heartsease (2006), Sensing the Park (2015) and was awarded Best Screening for a Small Ensemble in the Silent London Poll (Annie Laurie) in 2015.
Sean O’Kane – Button Accordion and Vocals
Sean O’Kane is a multi instrumentalist, vocalist and composer from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is known throughout Ireland for his distinctive performing style on the button accordion. He was a member of the band McPeake for eight years releasing an EP and full album (These Days date) with the band. He featured in the EMMY Award-winning PBS Special “Music of Ireland” and has toured extensively in the USA/Europe with notable live performances such as The Library of Congress in Washington DC, Milwaukee Irish Fest and BBC proms in the park. Sean also qualified as an optometrist in 2007.
Amy Leach – Lead Vocals and Piano
Amy Leach hails from Edinburgh. Initially inspired by the Muckle Sangs she has a passion for Scots Songs and Ballads. She has previously played in The Lindie Quartet, and has completed an MLitt on embodiment and community in traditional song. Currently she produces the Folkworks Programme at Sage Gateshead and also works as a freelance choir leader.
Alasdair Paul – Guitar and Vocals
Alasdair Paul is a musician and composer from Wester Ross and the Flyting’s guitarist. His interest in music began with piping lessons at school but after attending Feis Rois and joining his school folk group guitar quickly became his main instrument. He subsequently decided to pursue his studies in traditional music at Newcastle University where he is currently studying for his MMus. Outside the Flyting Alasdair plays guitar and bouzouki with Manx group Birlinn Jiarg and progressive folk sextet Pons Aelius and has released albums with both groups. He accompanied the silent film Annie Laurie alongside Shona Mooney and Amy Thatcher in the Barbican Theatre in London and the Hippodrome Bo’ness Cinema.
